Brookfield Properties scrapping retail waste with new packaging platform

Brookfield Properties announced it has agreed to serve as the real estate partner of Loop, a zero-waste packaging platform designed to address the issue of waste at its source by providing consumers a circular shopping experience and encouraging manufacturers to own and take responsibility for their packaging.

With Loop’s first real estate collaboration in the United States, Brookfield will test the platform at Brookfield Place (BFPL) in Lower Manhattan, starting with Brookfield’s employees, and at One Blue Slip at Greenpoint Landing in Brooklyn, providing access to Loop’s durable, reusable containers in partnership with brands including Clorox, Tide, Häagen Dazs, Seventh Generation, and more.

Today marks Loop’s U.S. launch, after its successful launch in France earlier this month.

“At Brookfield, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to enhance the sustainability of our properties, to make it easier for our tenants that want to act sustainably to do so, and to add amenities that make our tenants lives easier and more convenient. Loop can provide us an opportunity for us to do all three,” said Sara Fay, Vice President, Brookfield Properties.

“We are excited to pilot the environmentally-friendly initiative at two locations in New York with an eye to expanding it to our tenants over time if successful.”

“Loop’s partnership with Brookfield will help us innovate future expansion of the Loop platform including B2B deliveries and drop-off points while offering residents the exclusive opportunity to access a limited number of spaces in the pilot program,” said TerraCycle and Loop CEO Tom Szaky.

“We are very excited to begin this partnership in New York City and Brooklyn and hopefully expand internationally as Loop moves into new markets.”

Loop customers will be able to order everyday products – laundry detergent, pints of ice cream, deodorant, soap, salad dressing, spices, and so much more – from the brands they love in durable, sleek, reusable containers instead of disposable plastic packaging.

Once the Brookfield pilots are fully operational later this year, users who order products on loopstore.com will be able to pick up new products and return empty containers at designated places.

The model is a modern take on the age-old milkmen, who decades ago delivered reusable bottles filled with milk to homes and later picked them up to be refilled.
