IN PICTURES: NYU Schack Capital Markets Conference

For more than five decades, the NYU School of Professional Studies Schack Institute of Real Estate Capital Markets Conference in Real Estate has been one of the industry’s most prominent forums on the state of commercial real estate capital markets and investment activity.

Each year, the Conference brings together industry leaders for a vigorous debate on global equity and debt capital flows, institutional and private equity investment activity, and emerging sources of market disruption.

On November 15, 2018, a distinguished line-up of real estate, finance, and government leaders participated in panel discussions at the 51st Annual Conference on Capital Markets in Real Estate.

This year’s event, “Upstarts and Stalwarts: The New Rules of Real Estate Capital,” took place at The Pierre in New York City, and brought together innovators of industry for thoughtful conversation on the trends to watch as this fiscal year winds down and a new one begins. The themes of change and volatility were on the minds of panelists and audience members, as well as the news of Amazon’s selecting Long Island City as one of its two new headquarters.

The first panel on “Global Debt Capital Flows” featured Brian J. Baker, managing director & global head of commercial mortgages & real estate special opportunities, JPMorgan Chase; David Lehman, global head of real estate finance, Goldman Sachs; Kara McShane, managing director, head of commercial real estate capital markets & finance, Wells Fargo Securities; and Jeffrey F. DiModica, president & managing director, Starwood Property Trust. They discussed debt funds, lending, interest rates, and more with moderator Matt Borstein, global head of commercial real estate, Deutsche Bank .

The “Drivers of Real Estate Equity” panel was moderated by Lauren Hochfelder Silverman, managing director & head of real estate investing Americas, Morgan Stanley. Industry leadersJohn Jacobsson, executive vice president, Capital Markets Related Companies; Khaled W. Kudsi, senior managing director, Northwood Investors; and William (Billy) Rahm, partner & senior managing director, Centerbridge Partners, shared their perspectives on industry competition, the global economy, and the future of the

The “Global Sources of Institutional Capital” session featured Gary Phillips, managing director and head of acquisitions, Allianz Real Estate of America; Karen Horstmann, portfolio manager, Norges Bank Investment Management; Alisa Mall, director of investments, Carnegie Foundation; and Roberta Waxman-Lenz, portfolio manager, United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, in a discussion moderated by David Gilbert, chief executive & investment officer, Clarion Partners.
