Stuy Town tenants want a new owner

REW Staff
25,000 fed up Stuyvesant Town tenants are calling on the bill collector in charge of the complex to help them find a new owner - fast. “It has become frustrating for us as a community,ˮ said tenants association board member John Sheehy. “People are increasingly anxious that we get a true and real owner and not just a custodian for the bond holders.ˮ The comments came following a community meeting that drew officials from Brookfield Asset Management, banking consultants and lawyers as well as hundreds of residents who have accused the company servicing the debt on the ST/PCV apartment complex of dragging its feet on negotiating the sale of the development.

Will housing pull us out of recession again? Bull run on stocks making it look that way

REW
With US stocks collectively in the midst of their largest Bull Run since 2007, the focus of media attention has been on how far past record highs can the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) and the S&P 500 (INX) go this year. Friday, the S&P closed above 1500 points for the first time since 2008, its eighth straight positive trading day. The Dow, meanwhile, closed at 13805.98 on Friday, edging closer to its all-time record high of 14164.53, a milestone reached in October of 2007. But ever so quietly the performance of the Philadelphia Housing Sector Index (HGX), with strong earners like Lennar Corporation and Toll Brothers, have outdone the Dow, the S&P and the NASDAQ combined.

City says ‘Yes, squeeze’ to mini-apartment design

REW Staff
The city has picked a winner in the competition to design Manhattan's smallest apartments. A development team composed of Monadnock Development LLC, Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation, and nARCHITECTS will get to create 55 new apartments measuring as little as 250 s/f and to be known as micro-units. Forty per cent of the units — to be built at a city owned site at 335 East 27th Street in Manhattan — are to be affordable beyond the competitive market rents. Called ‘My Micro NY,’ it could be the first multi-unit building in Manhattan developed using modular construction, with the modules pre-fabricated locally by Capsys at the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
