Abrams Retail Strategies at Eastern Consolidated has arranged a 2,040 s/f lease at 1070 Madison Avenue between 80th and 81st Streets for California-based women’s apparel line Johnny Was.
The location will be the retailer’s second shop in Manhattan.
Robin Abrams, principal and Vice Chairman-Retail, Rebecca Olshan, director, and Lisa Rosenthal, senior director, represented the owner. The tenant was represented by Newmark Knight Frank.
“This is an unusual Madison Avenue retail space because it features 14-foot high ceilings and 30 feet of frontage,” Olshan said. “The retailer, whose bohemian designs are a cross between vintage and modern, will be a terrific addition to a block with a strong co-tenancy that includes Maje and Yves Delorme.”
Abrams added, “As Madison Avenue rents have increased in the 60s and low 70s, stores have started moving farther north on the corridor. Retailers, particularly contemporary brands like Johnny Was, are now opening shops in the upper 70s and low 80s.”
Founded in Southern California in 1987, Johnny Was currently has two New York stores — 270 Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side and Southampton. In total, the retailer has over 30 store locations planned or open across the US.
