Unions sponsor design competition that helps students build their future

The International Union of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers, Local Union No. 1, NY (IUBAC Local 1 NY) co-sponsored the “Venerable Materials for Modern Designs Contest” at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at City College.

The competition brings hands-on experience to architecture students in New York City and promotes the use of brick in modern design in order to create continuity between old and contemporary buildings.

During the week of April 10, 2014, the teams with the five best designs were named and awarded a total of $8,000 in prizes along with an exhibition of their competition work in the Spitzer School’s Atrium Gallery.

The winning teams of the competition were: First Place: Roman Hatnyanskyy and Lenny Chan. Second Place: Sainath Dasma and Midori Tanabe. Third Place: Sara Vezelaj and Bruno Pereira-Alexandre.

Working in teams of two, over 50 third-year students from City College’s Spitzer School of Architecture competed to design a meditation space for an open area adjacent to the French Evangelical Church at West 16th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues in Manhattan. The students’ completed designs were then judged by a jury of design and construction professionals.

Students also had the opportunity to visit the IUBAC and International Masonry Institute Training Center in Long Island City for a “hands-on” construction experience.
