That’s why smart leaders from all sectors of the real estate industry are continuing to make real estate an attractive career path for interested youth — and why we’re once again supporting the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City’s efforts to help young people launch meaningful careers.
The Real Estate Board of New York has always made cultivating young talent a top priority, and that is why we are proud to stand with two initiatives launched by the City and supported by the Mayor’s Fund and the NYC Center for Youth Employment: Ladders for Leaders and the New York City Career and Technical Education’s Industry Scholars Program.
Ladders for Leaders is a summer program that connects leading public high school and college students to industries including real estate with paid internships across the five boroughs.
Participating young people receive vital training prior to their employment, including help with resumes and cover letters, interview skills, and an overview of business etiquette. During the six week program, students learn the professional skills needed to operate in today’s fast-moving and highly-competitive economy – and many are extended offers to continue beyond that period.
Similarly, the Industry Scholars Program engages promising students who have a background in technical education, integrated work experiences, and personal motivation. Students take industry-specific courses–including industries like construction and engineering–over a six-week period.
Students in this program are equipped with similar business and professional skills that will help them thrive throughout their careers. Thousands of New Yorkers have benefited from these programs, helping to prepare our youth–and the city–for the future.
In the past, the interns who have been selected for internships through both of these programs have been as diverse as New York itself, which is a big part of the reason why there has been so much enthusiasm for these programs.
These programs have enjoyed continued growth over the past two years. Unfortunately, that means that the student demand continues to exceed the number of available internships –depriving both businesses and students of a great opportunity.
Successful business people are always planning for the future. REBNY is proud to support these programs, and that is why it is my sincere hope that our member organizations will take the time this year to learn more about Ladders for Leaders and the Industry Scholars Program.
Our thriving real estate industry has many valuable lessons to offer students to prepare them for life outside the classroom. And the reality is that New York’s students are among the very brightest in the country – so they’ll have quite a bit to teach us, too.
