Real estate champion Dottie Herman an example to us all

By Steven Spinola

Every so often, I like to devote a few words here to acknowledge an individual who helps keep the Real Estate Board of New York thriving, growing, and responsive to the needs of our members.

This week, I’d like to take a moment to recognize important industry leader and REBNY member, Dottie Herman.

A native New Yorker, Dorothy Herman, Dottie, was born in Brooklyn. She quickly became known in the real estate industry “from Manhattan to Montauk” and beyond.

After purchasing Prudential Long Island Realty in 1989, she soon turned it into one of the biggest names in Long Island real estate, and then moved on to purchase Douglas Elliman in 2003. Today, Douglas Elliman is one of the largest and fastest-growing real estate brokerage in New York, and the fourth largest real estate company in the nation with over 4,000 agents and 70 offices throughout New York and Florida.

Dottie Herman’s determination to succeed is matched only by her business expertise and passion for real estate.
Adelphi University honored Herman as the Outstanding Executive on Long Island, and she’s been featured as one of the most powerful women in New York by Crain’s New York Business. In addition, she is regularly featured in The New York Observer’s Power Lists.

Last year, she was the 2013 recipient of REBNY’s Kenneth R. Gerrety Humanitarian Award, which recognizes REBNY members for outstanding service to their communities.

Dottie is a dedicated supporter of the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, the Southampton Hospital, the North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital, the American Heart Association, and the Katz Institute for Women’s Health, and other worthy organizations.

Dottie is interested in all kinds of people. She’ll sit down with a total stranger and engage in a lengthy conversation, quickly finding areas of common interest and shared values.

She’s incredibly driven. She ensures that her company and her team meet their full potential, and encourages people to get out of their comfort zones and learn new things. She is a teacher, mentor and coach.

Dottie’s determination to succeed and selflessness in helping others is something that I believe lives inside of each of us. Thank you, Dottie, for being a great New Yorker and serving as a reminder to us that most of the limitations we think we face can be overcome with perseverance.
