Skanska awarded $365M contract for final phase of Croton-Harmon Yards project

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Metro-North Railroad selected the Skanska-ECCO Joint Venture to complete the final phase of the Croton-Harmon Shops and Yard complex rebuild.

The 100-acre complex was built in the early 1900’s, and currently serves as Metro North’s primary service, repair, and maintenance facility.

Under the design-build contract, valued at $365.1 million, Skanska will demolish two obsolete structures currently used for train maintenance and replace them with a new facility that will service Metro North’s electric fleet.

The Skanska team will also be responsible for the new building’s design, which will help expedite the project schedule while reducing costs.

“Skanska is thrilled to have the opportunity to continue our work with the MTA to deliver a brand-new Croton-Harmon Shops and Yard complex,” said Mike Viggiano, Executive Vice President, Skanska USA Civil.

“We recognize the importance of ensuring our regional transportation infrastructure remains world-class and are proud to be chosen to complete such a central project for Metro-North.”

The new repair and support shop will include a ground floor with infrastructure to accommodate ten “married pair” units – sets of two connected railcars – at a time.

There will also be a partial second floor that will house component repair workshops and office areas. In total, the shop will include 240,000 s/f of brand-new facilities.

To accommodate the new building, Skanska will also complete the abatement, demolition, and disposal of the existing Buildings 5 and 6, as well as corresponding site, utility, and track work.
Construction is set to begin in the first quarter of 2019 and is slated for completion in 2022.

Skanska has previously completed several design-build contracts on behalf of Metro-North to modernize the Croton-Harmon Shops and Yard complex, including a $14 million wheel maintenance facility.
