Spacesmith is pleased to announce the firm will be the architects for the New York City Family Justice Center, Staten Island, to be located in the renovated ground floor of 126 Stuyvesant Place. A significant new resource and safe haven for victims of domestic violence, this will be the first Family Justice Center on Staten Island.
The Family Justice Centers are a key initiative of the New York Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence (OCDV), which formulates policies and programs, monitors domestic violence support services citywide, works with diverse communities to increase awareness of this issue, and collaborates closely with government and nonprofit agencies that assist victims of domestic violence.
The Family Justice Centers provide vital social services, civil legal, and criminal justice assistance under one roof and free of charge, working in close partnership with the local District Attorney’s office. Existing Family Justice Centers are located in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.
Spacesmith looks forward to creating a safe, welcoming, and well-functioning space for this valuable new community facility. The NYC Family Justice Center, Staten Island will provide for client privacy and security while increasing the amount of natural light within the space.
The project program includes offices for social and legal assistance, interview rooms, a conference room, space for hospitality and training, a playroom, staff lounge, security, and reception. Spacesmith is honored to have this opportunity to design a dignified and optimistic space for such a valuable civic resource.
This project is part of the Design + Construction Excellence Program led by the NYC Department for Design and Construction (DDC), which recruits well-known and emerging architects to design the City’s new public buildings. Spacesmith is one of the firms selected through DDC’s innovative Quality-Based Selection process, an open request for proposals that emphasizes high architectural standards to ensure that all City buildings, regardless of size, are creatively designed, beautiful, and built to last.
The project team includes: Client: Department of Design + Construction; Architect: Spacesmith LLP; Structural: Robert Silman Associates; MEP: JFK&M Consulting Group; Cost: Accu-Cost Construction Consultants, Inc. Lighting: Renfro Design Group, Inc.
