Chess Grandmaster to relocate academy

Chess Max Academy, the Upper East Side chess school owned and operated by chess Grandmaster Maxim Dlugy, has signed a lease to relocate the academy.

It will move from a townhouse space at 423 East 81st Street to an 1,100 s/f storefront at 1470 First Avenue, between East 76th and East 77th Streets.

Expected to open in Fall 2018, the move represents a significant expansion of Chess Max Acacemy’s footprint.

“The retail at 1470 First Avenue was a great fit for Chess Max Academy because of a lack of columns that makes it easy to build out the space to suit their specific needs,” said Winick Realty Group Senior Director Hal Shapiro.

“It was important to Chess Max Academy that they stay on the Upper East Side in order to continue serving their neighborhood clientele. With this new space, they will also be able to reach new students thanks to a valuable avenue presence and an impressive 40 feet of First Avenue frontage.”

Shapiro represented landlord GP Associates in the lease transaction, while Chess Max Academy was represented by Claude Kolb of Metropolitan Property Group.

Moscow-born Dlugy has been a successful chess player since the 1980s, winning the International Master title, the World Junior Chess Championship and the Grandmaster title, among other honors.
