With climate change continuing to threaten the future of our city and its built environment, New York City’s real estate community is furthering its work to ensure the city and state remain leaders in sustainability efforts.
That’s why the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) has partnered with the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT), and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Initiative to launch Creating & Capturing the Value of Real Estate Sustainability in NYC, an energy efficiency and sustainability continuing education program for New York real estate brokers and agents.
On May 14th, REBNY will host a daylong continuing education course for licensed brokers and agents, which will be taught by trained instructors from the IMT and other industry experts. Real estate professionals from several of the largest residential and commercial real estate brokerages and real estate firms in New York City have agreed to participate, including Cushman & Wakefield, Vornado, CBRE, The Durst Organization, JLL, and FirstService Residential.
This course marks a new component of REBNY’s continuing education program and will position brokers and agents to succeed in New York’s competitive marketplace.
Through the course, attendees will better understand how once-academic, niche concepts of sustainability are becoming industry-standard and be able to take advantage of long- and short-term sustainability trends and best practices.
Participants will also learn about the market demand for sustainability, how to advise clients on energy efficiency and the financial benefits of energy-efficient buildings for landlords, tenants, building owners, and agents alike. Overall, participants will earn seven and a half hours of continuing education credit toward their State required continuing education credits.
With property owners’ and tenants’ energy usage and sustainability practices increasingly of interest to policymakers, the course will help ensure all segments of the real estate sector are positioned to help accomplish the State and City’s ambitious goals. These include New York State Governor Cuomo’s innovative goal to achieve a 100 percent carbon neutral economy by 2040 and Mayor de Blasio’s OneNYC goal of reducing citywide greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
This course and similar programs are critical to meeting the City’s sustainability goals. Collaboration between public and private partners is crucial to the success of these programs.
As the Vice Chairman and President of Tri-State Region for Cushman & Wakefield, John Santora explains, “Sustainability is a very important part of what we do day-to-day, and Cushman & Wakefield’s agents and sales professionals need to stay up-to-date on the most current trends to help our clients reach their clean energy goals. It is not only critical to the long-term success of our business, but for our city as well.”
REBNY and its members are leaders in New York’s environmental efforts, and we are proud to help educate our brokers and agents – and by extension their clients – on how to achieve a more sustainable New York to be enjoyed for generations to come.
