Famed Astor Place Hairstylists Signs 10-Year Lease at 2 Astor Place

GFP Real Estate, LLC is pleased to announce that Astor Place Hairstylists, known as one of the most iconic barber shops in America and a New York institution since 1947, signed a direct, 10-year lease for 8,104 square feet of lower-level retail space at 2 Astor Place (aka 740 Broadway).

Donna Vogel, senior managing director of GFP Real Estate, represented the landlord, GFP Real Estate, in the transaction.

“Astor Place Hairstylists is a New York institution,” said Jeffrey Gural, Chairman and Principal of GFP Real Estate.  “As a long-time client I am delighted to see that the business has not only pulled through the worst of the pandemic but is able remain in the same location they’ve occupied for more than 75 years.  They are an important tenant, and we look forward to their continued success.”

The barbershop—which features more than 40 trendsetting barbers from around the world, and has served everyone from politicians, professional athletes, artists, celebrities, NYU students and working-class New Yorkers—made news at the onset of the pandemic when it announced it may be forced to close.  At the time, a group of long-time clients stepped in to save the famed shop from closing permanently; GFP Real Estate Chairman Jeff Gural, the barbershop’s longtime landlord, was among those who offered assistance via reduced rent.

“I am grateful and gratified that Astor Place will be able to continue to serve New York City from the same location it’s occupied for over 75 years. Jeff Gural and the entire GFP Real Estate team have been incredible to us—without their support Astor would have closed,” said Jonathan Trichter, the angel investor and longtime customer who put together the deal to ensure Astor would endure and who guaranteed the new 10-year lease.

“I thank Jeff Gural and our friends at GFP Real Estate for what they did for us.  I also want to thank the Vezza family for opening this place 75 years ago, hiring me and allowing us to carry on in their name and after their retirement,” said Mike Saviello, the longtime manager of Astor Place Hairstylists and now one of the owners.

Built in 1912, 2 Astor Place, a.k.a. 740 Broadway, is a 12-story, 152,000-square-foot loft building designed by architect Francis H. Kimball in Beaux-Arts style.  Prominently situated on the Southeast corner of Broadway and Astor Place in NoHo, the building offers efficient flexible floorplates, high ceilings, tenant-controlled A/C and new large operable windows that provide an abundance of natural light and unobstructed views north. The building’s brand-new contemporary lobby features state-of-the-art architectural media walls that showcase breathtaking video footage of nature from around the world. Located just off Astor Place, the building offers a 24/7 attended lobby and close proximity to the 4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, and W trains via the Astor Place and Union Square stations, NJT’s 9th Street PATH and multiple bus lines.
