The Urban Land Institute New York has opened the application period for its 2016 Awards for Excellence in Development, a new event recognizing exemplary land use projects that raise the bar for design, planning and sustainability.
The Urban Land Institute has long held its own Global Awards for Excellence, widely recognized as the most prestigious awards program in the development community.
With this event, ULI New York will apply the same discerning eye to projects based in the New York area, a hotbed of activity in land use.
“As more Americans flock to cities as part of a global trend of urbanization, it has become singularly important for leaders in our field to demand creativity and holistic thinking when it comes to utilizing land,” said Robert C. Lieber, Chairman of the Urban Land Institute New York.
“By identifying and recognizing projects that best exemplify that forward-thinking spirit, we can catalyze innovation that will enhance the quality of life in communities around New York.”
The awards ceremony, to be held on March 10, 2016, will recognize and celebrate public, private, and non-profit developments in the New York area. Award recipients will be comprised of eligible projects embodying “best-in-class” development across six awards categories, including Excellence in Office Development, Housing Development, Institutional, Mixed-Use and Civic Development as well as Excellence in Repositioning or Redevelopment.
Each project will be considered based on how well it demonstrates environmental sustainability, broad acceptance in the marketplace, innovation in planning and design, relevance to the current and future needs of its community, and a contribution to promoting land use for the betterment of the community, as well as whether it could serve as a model to be replicated in other communities.
All submissions must have been completed, in whole or in part, on or after January 1, 2013.
“A great development today means more than just great design,” said Paul Schulman, president and chief operating officer U.S. Office Division of Brookfield Property Partners, and a co-chair of the event.
“It means a project that blends seamlessly with and enhances its neighborhood, and is environmentally conscious. I am thrilled to be working with the Urban Land Institute to help honor such projects, which I firmly believe will help lead our industry into the next generation.”

Judges serving on the awards jury include some of the biggest names in New York real estate, finance, academia, government, and architecture including Jonathan F.P. Rose: President, Jonathan Rose Companies, Marty Burger: Chief Executive Officer, Silverstein Properties; Veronica Hackett: Principal, The Clarett Group, Michael Franco:Executive Vice President – Chief Investment Officer, Vornado Realty Trust and Owen D. Thomas: CEO and Director, Boston Properties, Inc.
Submissions for the awards will be accepted until November 6 and finalists will be notified on December 21.
