Cornell University and AJ Capital has filed plans to build a 197-key hotel at 1 Main Street in Roosevelt Island.
According to a permit application filed with the Department of Buildings, the university is looking to build an 18-story tower with a height of 199 feet. The planned 139,083 s/f property will sit on a 100-foot wide lot. The building will contain function rooms on the third floor, hotel rooms on the sixth, tenth and 17th floors and an accessory game room for hotel guests at the 18th floor.
Cornell initially planned to build a tech campus at the site, with Forest City Ratner designated as the developer. The previous permit application for the site, filed in January 2015, called for a commercial building with 75,219 s/f of community space.
Last March, Cornell and AJ Capital announced plans to build a 196-room hotel in the campus. The Snohetta-designed hotel, which will be called “Graduate Roosevelt Island,” is expected to open in 2019.
Cornell Tech’s Roosevelt Island campus is expected to open its first phase in September. The first three buildings in the complex will be The Bloomberg Center, The Bridge and the House. Once it’s completed, the campus is expected to cover 12 acres and house 2,000 students.
Stonehill & Taylor is the architect of record for the project. The new structure will replace a low-rise building that once housed Goldwater Hospital.
