In 1882, Henry Villard, a prominent American railroad financier residing in New York City, commissioned the famous McCoy, Mead & White architects to design a Gilded Age neo-Italian villa.
The ensuing Villard Mansion, completed in 1884, featured design motifs found in 15th century Italian cathedrals. During the 20th century, the Villard Mansion transformed from a private residence to an elegant space for corporate functions and events.
The Villard Mansion property was designated a historic structure by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1968.
Today, The Villard Mansions are one of Manhattan’s most elegant historic structures. The North and South Villard Houses serve as the grand entranceway to the New York Palace hotel, originally constructed in 1974 by prominent New York City hotelier, Harry Helmsley.
The 55-story modern structure features 813 guestrooms and 86 suites. The hotel was recently acquired by Northwood Investors, who has commissioned a $150 million renovation.
