Buildings Department issues hurricane warning

The National Weather Service forecasts that impacts of Hurricane Irene may reach the New York metropolitan area this weekend, bringing tropical storm or hurricane force conditions. In preparation, the Department of Buildings is advising all builders, contractors, developers and property owners to secure their construction sites and buildings. The Department will be performing random spot-check inspections of construction sites around the city.

Partners to transform Bronx factory site into retail center

A five-acre former biscuit factory in Riverdale, in the northwest corner of the Bronx, is to be redeveloped as a multi-tenant retail center. Joseph Farkas, president of Metropolitan Realty Associates, has acquired the site for $18 million, in a joint venture with long-time equity partner Angelo, Gordon & Co., LP, and has announced plans to construct two retail buildings totaling 162,000 s/f. The development, which allows for rooftop parking, will be called Riverdale Crossing.

Thornton Tomasetti Selected for Kingdom Tower

Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, has been selected as structural engineer for Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which when completed will be the world’s tallest building at 1,000+ meters. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year. The structure will be the centerpiece of Kingdom City, a new urban development of more than 23 million square meters.

ACC builds bank a ‘wow’ factor

ACC Construction has completed the build-out of a significant corporate office space at 810 Seventh Avenue, a Class A building owned and managed by SL Green. SL Green and the tenant, Raine Group, retained LB Architects to design the 18,000 s/f space, and LB hit the right design notes in their dramatic, modern and very functional office design. Raine Group is an unusual merchant bank in that they are focused on entertainment, digital media and sports; given their market position, they wanted an office that is high style and polished, yet with a hint of unpredictability.
