Chelsea Piers Management, the developer of a large sports and entertaiment complex on the west side of Manhattan, has begun construction on a new 400,000 s/f sports facility in Stamford, Conn.
Branded as Chelsea Piers Connecticut, the new development will open in June 2012 and features two ice rinks, turf sporting fields, a gymnastics center and an aquatic center with an Olympic-sized pool and 6,000 s/f water play area. It will also have seven tennis courts, 12 squash courts, a trampoline and food and event spaces.
The new area will be part of The Campus, a 33-acre property owned by Spinnaker Real Estate Partners and Steven Wise Associates. LLC.
As the New York Times reported, Chelsea Piers had examined locations near major cities, but was drawn to the site because of its proximity to Interstate 95 and a demand for sporting facilities in the area. The developer hopes to attract visitors in the 20-miles radius around Stamford, including residents from Westchester County.
