State awards contracts for new energy-efficent retrofit solutions

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has awarded six design contracts for scalable energy-efficient retrofit solutions that can be replicated throughout the entire housing industry.

The contracts were awarded as part of the RetrofitNY’s High-Performance Retrofit Solutions pilot program, a first-of-its-kind effort launched earlier this year by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo as part of his goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030.

Bright Power and its team was among those awarded a contract. Jeffrey Perlman, founder and president of Bright Power, said, “It will prove that with the right partners you can design and scale deep energy retrofits of existing multifamily buildings. We look forward to working with our partners, Volmar Construction, Magnusson Architecture and Planning, Dagher Engineering, and Olive Branch Consulting.”

MAP’s work for the Bright Power team entails designing the retrofit for a five-story, 42-unit building at 300 East 162nd Street in the Bronx. The design phase is underway and is expected to end in the fall, with construction to follow. Alicia Barton, NYSERDA President and CEO, said, “RetrofitNY was created to stimulate a new industry capable of delivering replicable net-zero, or near net-zero, energy retrofits to residential building stock at scale.

“Statewide, buildings account for 60 percent of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, and improving energy efficiency in existing buildings is a critical component of achieving the Governor’s nation-leading clean energy and climate goals. The energy efficient retrofit products designed through the RetrofitNY program will offer multi-family buildings cost-effective and efficient means for cutting emissions and reducing their residents’ energy costs while making their homes more comfortable.”
