RXR Realty getting into Airbnb

Airbnb and RXR Realty are partnering to convert portions of popular New York City buildings into hotel space.

In their first joint project, RXR will convert 10 floors at its 75 Rockefeller Plaza office building to hotel rooms which will then be exclusively listed through Airbnb.

The real estate company will be responsible for operating the spaces, but the two entities will work together on room and building design, the development of a concierge, curating local experiences and more.

The spaces will also employ workers from the New York Hotel Trades Council and SEIU 32BJ, while also offering “hosts,” or concierges who have knowledge of the local area and offer guests a personalized experience.

The building is expected to be open by next year and Airbnb and RXR are also looking at expanding the model to 47 Hall Street in Brooklyn.

“When we launched Airbnb over 10 years ago, it was immediately clear how people opening their homes could make guests feel like locals,” said Brian Chesky, co-founder, CEO and head of community for Airbnb.

“With this new partnership with RXR, we hope to provide that same unique feeling, in the form of new spaces in the heart of Midtown Manhattan and elsewhere — so that everyone can enjoy an authentic New York experience.”

75 Rockefeller will have a total of 200 Airbnb units that will have tech-enabled access and security systems for guests, while providing them access to a private social club and business center at the top of the building. The guests will also have access to the building’s meeting rooms, event spaces, work spaces and ground-floor restaurant.

“With the lines between business travel and leisure travel becoming increasingly blurred, RXR and Airbnb are offering a travel experience that immerses guests in a dynamic, thriving community in the heart of Rockefeller Center that’s vastly different than anything else in the market today,” said Scott Rechler, chair and CEO of RXR.

“We’re proud to partner with one of the most innovative companies in the world to provide a unique and authentic travel experience unlike any other in New York City.”

The news comes as Marriot International launches its Homes & Villas program that will offer 2,000 home rentals throughout the US, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America.

“The launch of Homes & Villas by Marriott International reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation as consumer travel needs evolve,” said Stephanie Linnartz, Marriot’s global chief commercial officer.

“What started out as a pilot a year ago is now a global offering, providing our guests with the space and amenities of a home backed by a trusted travel company, and the very best in loyalty benefits.”
