Hempstead downtown mixed-use transit oriented development is a public-private partnership between Renaissance Downtowns-Urban America (RDUA) and the Village of Hempstead.
“Projects of Regional Significance” are projects which can potentially affect the quality of life for residents in a regionally significant way in areas of economic development, housing, transportation, energy, environment, education, public health, emergency preparedness and social and economic equity.
“We are pleased the Long Island Regional Planning Council has recognized our strategy to redevelop downtown Hempstead in a holistic and comprehensive manner that will benefit the entire community in a socially, environmentally and economically responsible manner,” stated Donald Monti, president and CEO of Renaissance Downtowns.
“We are excited to move on to the next step in working with the Village of Hempstead to secure a Community Benefits Agreement and Project Labor Agreement with an eye toward breaking ground in early 2012.”
Hempstead Mayor Wayne J. Hall Sr. said, “Since taking office, my administration’s focus has been on improving the economic vitality, safety and quality of life of our community. A major part of this commitment has been the smart growth development of our downtown area.
“The Hempstead Rising Project will help us achieve all of these goals and I look forward to what lies ahead for the Village.”
The Community Benefits Agreement will be an agreement between Renaissance Downtowns Urban America and the Village of Hempstead to ensure local employment opportunities are created when moving forward with the project.
Overall, the project is expected to create 3,500 permanent jobs and over 10,000 construction job years.
RDUA has already engaged in discussions with the local building trades in an effort to garner their participation in a Project Labor Agreement that will further reinforce the need to provide job and career opportunities to local Hempstead residents.
Renaissance Downtowns is master developer in six Northeast municipalities which represent over $8 billion in development potential. Urban America is one of the nation’s largest minority owned development companies.
They have been pioneers in investing in urban locations that provide opportunities for economic and social benefits for the communities in which they work.
