WR Communities and the Albanese Organization yesterday (Tuesday) began construction on a new Long Island neighborhood.
In co-operation with Suffolk County and the Town of Babylon, the mixed-use retail and residential building in Wyandanch, NY, is part of a community designated as one of the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council’s Priority Goals: Wyandanch Rising.
The groundbreaking marks the beginning of a new neighborhood that exemplifies the principles of smart growth: a walkable community centered around a new LIRR station, open parks and green spaces, stylish and affordable apartment living, neighborhood shops, and services.
Representatives from the Albanese Organization were joined at the groundreaking by officials from New York State, Suffolk County, and the Town of Babylon.
“We, as a community, have an obligation to ourselves, our youth and our families to offer affordable and sustainable housing options in neighborhoods that are vibrant and safe – and provide an overall wonderful quality of life,” County Executive Steve Bellone said. “Wyandanch Rising will offer just that.”
Beginning with 12 acres and ultimately encompassing more than 40 acres the new walkable community will have a park and new railroad station at its core.
LEED-certified apartment homes will be built with first floor retail space designed by Beatty Harvey Coco Architects.
