New certification for environmental contractors

The Environmental Contractors Association announced the formation of the Certified Environmental Remediation Training (CERT) Institute.

The new site safety initiative has training centers in Midtown Manhattan, Long Island City and Bayonne, New Jersey, that provide education and training related to infectious disease and contamination on construction and renovation sites.

CERT aims to partner with contractors and educate their professionals on hazardous materials to promote risk reduction, protection of property and facilities, preparation for regulations and increased safety for staff, occupants and the public.

“We believe it is of the upmost importance that active jobsite members have an understanding of environmental contamination safety,” said Morris Napolitano, co-founder, CERT. “With project leaders vigilant and trained, we can help achieve cleaner and safer job sites for everyone.”

General awareness courses are open to anyone who would benefit from increased environmental emergency response awareness, such as property managers, operators, REIT directors and hospital and facility managers.

Contractors and subcontractors can also train jobsite personnel as site environmental managers as a way of ensuring jobsite safety and the proper handling of environmental hazardous conditions.

The CERT Institute curricula consists of eight three-hour sessions, with topics including asbestos, lead, mold, infectious disease, cross contamination and environmental toxins.

More advanced professional and supervisor courses are designed for licensed environmental remediation professionals.

Attendees will receive advanced knowledge of pathogen containment and hazardous condition response, culminating in a final exam. Graduates from the program will be able to identify and deal with hazardous conditions and jobsites.
