A new supermarket offering fresh food in downtown Paterson, NJ, long considered a “food desert,” is now offering city residents healthy produce and creating 88 new jobs.
The 34,000 s/f Price Rite at the Center City Mall began serving customers on Nov. 18. It is a one-stop supermarket offering fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood, dairy, an organic section and a full array of frozen and packaged goods, open seven days a week.
The mall is managed by Alma Realty.
The new grocer has brought much-needed whole food choices for local residents and provides 88 jobs, 80 of which are staffed by Paterson residents. More jobs are expected to be created at the store.
“This is such an incredible sign of progress for the redevelopment of Paterson’s Downtown,” said Ekaterina Valiotis, Director of Property Management at Alma Realty.
“This community needs access to healthy and affordable food options and shoppers will find them at this beautiful new store. The opening of Price Rite also furthers our commitment to investing in Paterson to create jobs.
“Local residents can work and shop right here in their own community, which in turn has an economic multiplier effect, helping to boost small businesses and encourage new development.”
Price Rite Paterson by Inserra Supermarkets on Saturday donated $2,500 to the Food Bank of New Jersey.
The opening is part of the $100 million redevelopment Alma Realty Corp has led in Downtown Paterson over the past decade. The mall supports over 400 jobs on-site, and continues to welcome new retail and office tenants.
With its proximity to mass transit and several highways, the mall is an anchor for a revitalized downtown and will continue to attract new investment, along with the city’s plans to expand and improve the Great Falls National Park, build a new Visitors Center, restore the Art Factory complex, and enhance the NJ Transit station.
Wakefern Food Corp, based in Keasbey, N.J., is the largest supermarket cooperative in the United States, with over 300 ShopRite, Price Rite and The Fresh Grocer grocery stores in nine states. It is the largest employer in New Jersey with over 36,000 employees.
