School for the gifted expands to 85,000 s/f on West Side

In one of the largest Manhattan leases of 2012 for an educational center, Colliers International has arranged a long-term, 85,000 s/f expansion and relocation on behalf of The Speyer Legacy School on Manhattan’s West Side.

The school for intellectually advanced students, grades K-8, will be moving to a two-building campus at 400 W 59th Street and 925 Ninth Avenue, both owned by The Brodsky Organization.

Josh Kuriloff, vice chairman, Jodi Roberts, managing director, and Andrew Braver, associate, of Cushman & Wakefield, represented the landlord in the transaction.
Alex Jinishian, vice chairman, and Phil Amarante, senior managing director, of Colliers International, represented the tenant.

“We need to offer an appropriately rigorous and thoughtful education for our most high-potential learners so that they may become thought leaders and action leaders both in their chosen professions and in society at-large,” said Dr. Kelly Posner, co-founder and co-chairman of The Speyer Legacy School.

“They need to be in an environment where their potential can be nurtured. This new building will allow us to provide an ideal environment for Speyer students.”

Speyer co-founder Jennifer Selendy added,“We very much wanted to remain on the West Side, and the Brodsky Organization truly embraced our mission. They see our school as adding something vital to the quality and character of their buildings and the neighborhood.”

Demand for enrollment at The Speyer Legacy School drove this significant transaction, with the school increasing in size from 9,000 s/f at its current location, 15 West 86th Street, to 85,000 s/f at the new location. Construction on the two buildings will commence in March, and will accommodate students in the new space beginning in the fall 2013.

Designed by architects Davis Brody Bond, the campus will include a staircase connecting the historic and modern buildings, stem and media labs, a music and performing arts wing and a cafeteria and multi-purpose space .
